Local sources report that explosions have been ongoing in areas with civilian populations, as the military council has consecutively carried out bombing attacks on about five areas in Kachin State in recent days, where no fighting had previously occurred.
In the past week, the military council bombed Mung Seng Yang in Laiza, the Myitkyina- Sumprabum road, Wai-shi, Tangbau Yang on the road to Injangyang, Lanse, Yinphyu village near Sadon, and areas near Waing Maw, without any apparent reason.
Regarding the indiscriminate bombing attacks, Colonel Naw Bu, spokesperson of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), said: “In my view, since the junta is unable to carry out ground offensives, they are resorting to indiscriminate attacks. With the fighting intensifying in Bhamo, I believe the military is targeting areas where there is no ongoing fighting.”
“The battle for Bhamo town has been ongoing for about two months. The military council, which is losing ground, has lost several strategically important battalions crucial to the control of Bhamo. Military Operations Command (MOC)-21, where many junta soldiers are stationed, is under siege and facing attacks. In response, the junta is carrying out these retaliatory strikes.” said Colonel Naw Bu.
In the past week, the military council carried out bombing attacks on the Myitkyina, Waingmaw, and Tsawlaw Townships in Kachin State, resulting in civilian deaths and damage to buildings.
On 7 February, the military council bombed Lanse village in Tsawlaw Township, which is under control of KIO, injuring five civilians and destroying a school and some buildings, according to locals.
On the same day, the military council dropped bombs three times on Yinphyu village, located in the upper part of Sadon in Waing Maw Township. A bomb remained unexploded near the school in Sadon, according to a local man.
“The junta carried out attacks with a jet fighter between 2 pm and 3 pm on 7 February. The bombing site is not very close to Sadon village. It is in Yinphyu in the upper border. A bomb landed near the school. No one was injured. However, the people are worried,” the local man said.
On 4 Ferbruary, the military council bombed three areas including Tayang Zup and Wai Shi on the upstream of Myitsone, which are captured by Kachin Independence Army (KIA), killing two locals.
On the night of 10 February, the military council’s forces carried out airstrikes and bombings on areas in Waingmaw, which are believed to be occupied by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied groups, according to local residents in Waing Maw.
According to frontline sources, the military council’s forces are also carrying out daily airstrikes and bombings in Bhamo, Kachin State, as fighting continues for control of the town.
