Junta airstrike in Kawkareik kills 6, including children

Six civilians, including children, were killed when the military junta conducted a bombing in Kawkareik Township, Karen State, on the afternoon of 9 June.

Local residents reported that the junta conducted a bombing near a house where children were studying in Ka Nyin Ka Taik village, Paing Yat village tract, Kawkareik Township, killing three children and one adult on the spot.

“Yesterday, three children and one man died. They died right there on the spot. A female teacher also died while we were transporting the injured to the hospital. This morning, one more person died. So now, the death toll is six,” said a local man.

Out of 11 people injured in the airstrike, two more have died, and the remaining nine are still receiving medical treatment at Mawlamyine Hospital.

The house that was hit in the bombing was reportedly a self-funded school where children were being taught.

Locals also said that there were no ongoing battles in the area. Ka Nyin Ka Taik, the village hit in the junta airstrike, is located on the Karen State side of the border between Karen State and Mon State.

A military source said: “In Kawkareik, fighting happens in some areas, but even in places where there’s no fighting, people are living in fear of heavy weapons, aircraft, and drones. Out of concern for the children, they’ve stopped studying at schools and are learning at home. Now, with this kind of attack happening while they’re studying at home, everyone is terrified.”

Due to repeated airstrikes by the military council, many children are too afraid to attend school, and most are being taught at home.

Following the airstrike on Ka Nyin Ka Taik village, the junta continued bombing other villages, including Kyone Doe, Ohn Ta Pin, and Inn Gyi, according to military sources on the ground.
