IEC grants amnesty to 28 prisoners to mark Karenni National Day

In honor of the 150th Karenni National Day and as a gesture of respect for humanitarian values, the Interim Executive Council of Karenni State announced on 21 June that 28 prisoners from various detention centers under the IEC have been granted amnesty.

Additionally, the IEC announced that another 148 prisoners have been granted sentence reductions.

Regarding the prisoners granted amnesty and their cases, U Banyar, Secretary-2 of the IEC, said, “We can’t provide detailed information at this time, but we will release all the details later. The cases cover a variety of offenses, with theft and drug-related charges being the most common. Among those released are two women.”

The IEC also reported that Prison No. 1 houses 150 inmates, while Prison No. 2 holds 80 inmates.

According to the Karenni State Police (KSP) three-year anniversary report dated 25 August 2024, 100 prisoners were granted amnesty and 105 others received sentence reductions during special commemorative days.
