In May, fighting between the junta and resistance forces, along with the junta’s naval and airstrikes, displaced over 80,000 locals in Tanintharyi Region.
According to the local research group FE5 Thanintharyi, the junta’s offensive in May on the Dawei deep-seaport area—including targeted attacks on nearby villages and civilian arrests—has caused the number of displaced people to rise to over 80,800.
FE5 Thanintharyi reported that at least 41,800 civilians were displaced in Dawei, Launglon, Yephyu, and Tha Yet Chaung Townships within Dawei District.
In addition to the fighting between the two sides, at least 37,000 people were displaced by artillery shelling in Palaw, Tanintharyi, Myeik, and Kyunsu Townships within Myeik District.
In addition, FE 5 Thanintharyi reported that nearly 2,000 people were displaced due to the military council’s offensive and artillery shelling in Bokepyin Township, Kawthaung District.
On the other hand, the military council has restricted the transportation of rice, food, and medicine in the Dawei Ashae Taw area, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Taunggyak Station, and Tanintharyi and Palaw Townships.
According to FE5 Thanintharyi’s report, internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tanintharyi Region are suffering from malaria, dengue fever, diarrhea, and skin diseases, along with a shortage of medicine.
Their situation is worsened by the lack of adequate shelter during the rainy season due to prolonged displacement.
Last April, fighting and airstrikes in Tanintharyi Region displaced more than 75,300 people.
