Five civilians killed, many injured in Mogok aerial bombing

Five civilians were killed and many others injured in an airstrike by the junta on Mogok in Mandalay Region, at 1 am on 10 February, according to locals.

The military council dropped at least 20 bombs on the area using a Y-12 plane.

A local woman from Mogok said, “Five people were killed, all of whom were men. Twenty people were injured, including women and the elderly. The military council dropped bombs on the mining site.”

Mogok is under control of the Palaung State Liberation Front/ Ta’ang National Liberation Army (PSLF/TNLA).

Locals said the victims of the aerial bombings were assumed to be gem site workers, as the bombings targeted the gem site. They identified the site as the Win Hta Yan gem mining site, located to the west of Mogok.

A local man from Mogok said, “The aerial bombings took place on the outskirts of Mogok, about 10 minutes from the town’s wards. The attack occurred inside the gem mining site, located between two villages. All those killed in the bombing were civilians. Around seven houses were burned down.”

Pro-junta Telegram channels said the army dropped around 20 bombs on Win Hta Yan gem mining site in Mogok Township, which is located in TNLA Brigade 2 Territory.

A joint force of the TNLA and Mandalay-People’s Defense Force (MDY-PDF) sezied complete control of Mogok on 24 July 2024. Currently, the PSLF/TNLA is carrying out rehabilitation works in the area.
