The Basic Education General Strike Committee (BEGSC) has urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action in investigating the murder of an officer of the Kani Township Education Board and his family members in Sagaing Region.
U Kyaw Ye Lwin from the BEGSC said in the statement released on 3 December that nearly a month has passed since U Win Htay, an official of the Education Board and his family members were killed. He emphasized that the delay in uncovering the truth behind the incident is the reason for this appeal.
U Kyaw Ye Lwin said, “It is crucial that such incidents do not occur again in areas controlled by revolutionary groups. However, we believe it is more important to uncover the truth about the events that have already taken place than to focus solely on preventing future occurrences.”
On the night of 4 November 2024, U Win Htay, an official of the Kani Township Education Board, along with his wife and their 3-month-old baby, were assassinated at their home in Tapone village.
Tapone village, where U Win Htay and his family lived, is an area under their control. This incident is unacceptable, and it is crucial to uncover the truth, U Kyaw Ye Lwin added.
U Kyaw Ye Lwin said, “We strongly condemn such inhuman and arbitrary killings in areas controlled by the revolutionary forces. We denounce these killings. In November, we issued statements to denounce them.”
The Ministry of Education under the National Unity Government (NUG) 6 November announced that all those responsible for ordering the incident, as well as the perpetrators, will be identified and held accountable to ensure justice.
However, a teacher and in-charge of the Kani Township Board of Education stated that, since the case remains unresolved, CDM education staff are feeling insecure.
He said, “There have been similar cases that remain unresolved and delayed. As a result, those working to develop interim education on the ground are feeling insecure.”
The BEGSC announced that it will conduct both ground and online campaigns on 4 December, marking one month since the incident, in order to uncover the truth.
In early July of this year, Ko Myint Myat Oo, a 16-year-old matriculation student and member of the Students Union, was murdered in Saing Naing Gyi village in Wetlet Township, an area under the control of revolutionary forces. Locals report that the case has yet to be resolved.
