The military council’s airstrikes and shelling resulted in more than 40 civilian casualties in three townships in Arakan State, in two days, according to the list compiled.
On 15 May, the junta’s airstrikes on Welgyidaunt hospital in Kyauktaw Township killed some civilians and wounded 20 others.
On 14 May, the military council attacked Kinchaung village in Maungdaw Township with jet fighters, killing four villagers and wounding four others.
Likewise, the military council’s shelling killed 10 people and wounded others in Linthi village in Thandwe Township.
There is a growing concern among the people following the military council’s targeted attacks on civilians, a local from Thandwe said.
“There has never been such a mass death in a battle in Thandwe Township. The people are not worried as they have never experienced it before. They are scared and worried when they encounter it,” the local said.
Since 13 April, fighting has erupted between the military council and the Arakan Army (AA) in Thandwe Township. The number of civilian casualties has increased, following the military council’s incessant shelling and airstrikes in the conflict-affected villages and surrounding areas.
The junta’s airstrikes on the villages in Maungdaw Township have led to an increase in the number of civilian casualties. Civilian houses in the villages were burned to ashes.
Due to the military council’s frequent airstrikes, the number of civilian casualties continues to rise in Kyauktaw Township which is under the control of the AA.
A local from Kyauktaw said, “In particular, the military council’s attacks on hospitals, religious buildings and crowded civilian targets have resulted in many civilian casualties. We want the international community to take stern action against the military council which is committing war crimes targeting civilians.”
The military council’s airstrikes wounded a civilian in Minbya Township of Arakan State on 15 May.
From 13 November 2023 to 21 March 2024, the junta’s airstrikes, shelling and naval attacks killed at least 179 civilians and wounded 468 others in Arakan State, according to the Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO).
