AA allows Muslim IDPs from Maungdaw town to return home

The Arakha Army (AA) has permitted Muslim internally displaced persons (IDPs), who fled during the conflict in Maungdaw, Arakan State, to return to their homes in Maungdaw town, according to reports.

A local displaced Muslim said: “On 7 April, they allowed entry to Ward 1 and Ward 4. On 8 April , we got permission to enter Ward 2. Things are getting lively now. We can move around freely, too.”

Residents were instructed to report any incidents of homes being broken into during their displacement, along with lists of missing items, to the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government, according to a Muslim elder who returned from the Hla Phoe Khaung IDP camp.

“If anyone’s home was broken into, they’ve been told to compile a list of missing items and report it to the AA,” he said.

Most Muslim IDPs from Maungdaw town had sought temporary shelter in Hla Phoe Khaung during the conflict. Since 1 April 2025, the AA has allowed them to return to their homes in batches, the elder added.

“They’ve provided household registration lists for each family, and local Muslim community leaders, along with the AA regional commander, have worked together to arrange transportation. The AA officials are treating us well and helping with what we need,” he said.

During the conflict, while Maungdaw residents were displaced, the AA reportedly arrested and sentenced over 100 local individuals involved in looting and burglaries, according to residents.
