The proposed United Nations resolution on Myanmar urges the unhindered, safe, and rapid delivery of humanitarian aid. The draft resolution also condemns the Myanmar military’s attacks on civilians and calls for peace efforts. 1
Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), urged UN member states to assist in issuing arrest warrants for Myanmar’s military leaders. He made this appeal during his presentation of findings on Myanmar at session of the UN Human Rights Council on 9 September.
The IIMM has shared its findings with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), and Argentine courts. While these courts are continuously investigating cases, Koumjian pointed out that not only courts but also countries need to be involved in issuing arrest warrants for the military leaders. 2
On 9 September, which marks the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, the British Embassy in Myanmar welcomed the Karen National Union’s (KNU) signing for the safety of schools in Karen State. It also encouraged other organizations to sign and respect the Safe Schools Declaration. 3
The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, arrived in Myanmar for a five-day visit from September 5 to 9. During this trip, she met with coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and visited Arakan State. The Red Cross chief’s visit comes at a time when conflict and violence are escalating, and humanitarian conditions are deteriorating.
According to an ICRC statement, during her meeting with the junta chief, Ms Spoljaric spoke about the ICRC’s intention and ability to increase humanitarian assistance, and advocated for greater access to conflict-affected areas. 4
