Five staff including the rector and pro-rector of Loikaw University, imprisoned by the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC), were granted amnesty on 8 May, said Khu Plu Reh, General Secretary of the IEC.
Khu Plu Reh said, “Five staff including the rector did not violate any rules while serving their prison terms. On the other hand, they are not in good health as they are elderly. Based on these factors, we decided to release them.”
From the humanitarain point of view and in accordance with the majority’s decision, the IEC granted amnesty to five staff including the Loikaw University rector, Khu Plu Reh added.
According to the Pardon and Supervision Board’s report, they were released under Section 32 of the Karenni State Interim Judiciary Law, from the humanitarian point of view.
Rector U Aung Khin Myint, Pro-rector Daw Thida and staff Daw Hla Lay Myint, Daw Yin Yin Naing and Daw Moet Moet Tun were prosecuted under Section 17/1 of the Unlawful Associations Act. Now they all have been transported to their native towns.
“They have been sent to their native towns through safe channels,” said Khu Plu Reh.
The revolutionary forces rescused and detained 204 non-Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) staff including the rector, stranded in Loikaw University during Operation 1111.
On 25 February, five people including the rector of Loikaw University were sentenced to two years each in prison, with a fine of Ks-900,000, by the IEC.
The IEC interrogated non-CDM staff and their family members. The IEC exiled them with a pledge not to work again under the junta and to stand together with the public.
