Around 60 civilians killed by military council in Sagaing Region in a month

As many as 58 people died at the hands of the military council in Sagaing Region in May, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

According to the AAPP’s report on 24 May, it documented the names of 43 men and 15 women killed in Sagaing Region between 1 and 24 May.

On 9 May, the military council massacred 32 civilians in Let Htoke Taw village in Myinmu Township in Sagaing Region.

A civilian from Let Htoke Taw said, “The junta’s shelling hit and killed six villagers. Twenty-five civilians—24 men and one woman—were shot dead. One of the wounded also died, bringing the total to 32.”

The Let Htoke Taw massacre was committed by a combined force of around 70 members of No.13 Infantry Battalion-13 under No.33 Light Infantry Division, No.909 Battlefield Engineering Battalion, No.929 Supporting and Communication Battalion and Pyu Saw Htee force formed with war veterans, the Human Rights Ministry under National Unity Government (NUG) said.

On 12 May, the NUG’s Human Rights Ministry said it would try to bring justice through possible judicial mechanisms for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In February this year, the military council increased its presence and raided the villages in Sagaing Region. They are committing killings and arson attacks more and more, according to locals and resistance forces.

In May, among those killed by the junta were four youths aged under 18 and three aged over 60, most of whom were shot dead by military council soldiers, according to the AAPP’s statement.
