The Mon State Federal Council (MSFC) announced on 6 March that 33 people were reportedly affected by the human rights violations committed by the military council in Mon State in February. Of them, two women died.

The number of those wounded in the junta’s heavy shells fired into Ye and Bilin Townships and other villages in Mon state is higher. Two women were killed in the junta’s heavy shelling and airstrikes in Thanbyuzayat and Kyaikmaraw Townships, the MSFC’s statement says.

Around 3,000 locals were displaced by armed conflicts in Mon State in February.

Of them, more than 2,000 locals were displaced by the junta’s airstrikes and heavy shelling amid fighting between the military council and revolutionary forces in Wintarpan village in Bilin Township, the MSFC says.

Nai Mon Sai, Chair of the Executive Committee of the MSFC said: “The people from Wintarpan village-tract mainly have fled for safety. Fighting continues. The military council is conducting an offensive. Some people have fled due to shootings in Kyonelaung village in Ye Township. Locals remain displaced. According to the latest news, the military column even has reached the place where the villagers are taking shelter. Displaced villagers have to move from one place to another due to heavy shelling.”

Similarly, the junta soldiers arrest, extort and threaten youths on the streets in downtown wards in Mon State, following the enforcement of the military council’s People’s Military Service Law. It makes urban life unsafe, according to local news sources.

Regarding the human rights violations, Nai Mon Sai said: “After the military coup, most of regions have seen resistance by the revolutionary forces and anti-dictator movements. In my view, the junta soldiers are deliberately threatening and killing the people with the “Four Cuts” strategy so that they don’t support the revolutionary groups.”

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also submitted a 5-point report to the UN General Assembly in September 2023, which includes a point to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the violation of human rights by the military council against the people of Myanmar after the coup.
