Heavy shelling kills two children in Kyaikmayaw

Fighting continued near Chaunghnakhwa village in Kyaikmayaw Township of Mon State on 10 November. Two children were killed by heavy shelling, according to locals.

Fighting erupted as the joint force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) attacked the military council soldiers stationed at the police station and the outpost at Chaunghnakhwa bridge in Kyaikmayaw Township, at around 4 am on 10 November.

At around noon on 12 November, a heavy shell hit and killed a seven-year-old child and an eight-year-old child in Pawlawkone village in Kyaikmayaw Township, locals said.

On 13 November, fighting continued. The military council conducted airstrikes. The military council’s artillery battalion based in Mudon is firing heavy shells, locals continued.
Locals are stranded as the military council has blocked the roads after the fighting.

“Many villagers have fled. The people from Taungkalay and Maltaro villages are hiding in their villages. Some people could manage to flee the villages. Fighting continues. Planes are flying. The displaced people are allocated in Kyun village. The stranded people are allocated at Kanarlo monastery. There are many stranded people. The army does not allow them to go outside the villages,” a villager from Maltaro village said.

Currently, locals from more than ten villages including Chaunghnakhwa, Maltaro, Taungkalay, Kanarlo and Kyantaw villages are stranded. It is a worrying situation for the stranded people as fighting continues to intensify.

The news has emerged that the revolutionary force captured the police outpost and bridge in Chaunghnakhwa.

The military council’s airstrikes and heavy shelling have resulted in civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian houses.

The fighting has blocked Mudon-Chaunghnakhwa-Kyarinseikgyi road section and Mudon- Chaunghnakhwa-Tagundaing road section.

The joint force of the KNLA and PDF frequently attacks the police outpost and the bridge gate in Chaunghnakhwa village. This attack is more intense than before, according to locals.
