Ceasefire or Intermission – Issue 82

“As long as they are there, we won’t return to the village. We’ll dare to return only when we get a security guarantee that there will be no more fighting, or the soldiers won’t enter the village and cause trouble.”

The above words were said by a displaced woman from Baung Dut village in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan State. “As long as they are there” refers to the presence of military council troops in the village, where two junta battalions of the 377th and 378th are reportedly stationed.

The confirmation of a ceasefire between the military council and the Arakan Army (AA) in the last week of November has drawn people’s attention.
