Is the USDP – A Haven for Military Officers Turned Politicians – Worth Voting for in the Elections? – Issue 74

This week saw leadership changes in the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) – the military-backed political party widely described as a “haven for politicians emerging from Myanmar’s military regime”. Although the appointment of new party leaders was announced at the USDP’s third conference on October 4-5, the positions of Vice -Chairman, Secretary General, and some central committee members have not been filled. Party officials are apparently still waiting for the list of names to be submitted by the military regime and coup leader, Min Aung Hlaing.

The USDP, which has never won an election, with the exception of the 2010 general election where it dominated through ‘advance polls’, has been preparing for an election to be held by the military council. The upcoming general election is expected to take place in 2023. This issue of BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor’s Weekly News Review will look at whether the USDP – a haven for military officers turned politicians – is worth voting for in the elections.
