Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State granted amnesty to 12 prisoners and pardoned 105 others in commemoration of the Karenni National Day which falls on 21 June, said Khu Taw Reh, head of the Jusctice Department under the IEC.

“The release of prisoners is a symbolic gesture marking this significant day. We freed them the humanitarian point of view. The prisoners themselves will strive to improve their moral conduct while in prison. After being released from prison, they themselves continue to maintain these improvements. This is an honour for them as they behave well while serving their prison sentences,” said Khu Taw Reh.

This is the second time that the IEC has granted amnesty to the prisoners.

On 8 May, the IEC granted amnesty to five imprisoned staff including the rector and pro-rector of Loikaw University.

They were granted amnesty with the condition that if they commit another crime, they will serve the remainder of their original sentences along with any new punishment imposed.

According to Article 32 (b) and subsection (2) of Karenni State Interim Measures and Article 32 of Karenni State Interim Judiciary Law, the IEC set them free.

More than 200 prisoners remain behind bars in Karenni State.
