As a diplomatic success of the National Unity Government (NUG), Australian Foreign Minister H.E. the Hon Penny Wong and National Unity Government (NUG) Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung met in Canberra, the capital of Australia, on 4 June. Daw Zin Mar Aung discussed the urgent need for international assistance to protect human rights and promote democratic governance in Myanmar. 1

Defense Ministers and government officials from the Asia Pacific region, North America, Europe and Middle Eastern countries attended the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Although there was no representative from Myanmar, a special session on the Myanmar issues titled “Opportunities for diplomacy among different views for peace” was held on 31 May.

The participants emphasized the importance of resolving the Myanmar crisis to guarantee the safety, peace, and prosperity of the entire Asia Pacific region. However, it would take a long time to resolve the Myanmar crisis. In addition, there are disappointments of the Myanmar issue. And they must continue to work on Myanmar affairs, keeping the interest of the people of Myanmar in mind. Myanmar’s problem must be solved only by Myanmar people. ASEAN and the international community will meet and discuss with all stakeholders in Myanmar to help bring about a situation that can be resolved. 2 

High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk visited Malaysia, which strongly opposes the military coup among ASEAN countries, and met with the Malaysian Prime Minister on 4 June. During the meeting, he added that it is important for Malaysia to resolve the Myanmar issue when it becomes the rotating chairs of ASEAN, and that Malaysia’s leadership role is key when the international community has been trying to resolve the Myanmar issue.3

The British Embassy in Myanmar issued a statement on 4 June that the military council continues to perpetrate violence against civilians across Myanmar, including the inhuman killings that occurred in Sittwe Township, Arakan State, and that it must be held accountable for these crimes. 4
