Thousands flee as junta stroms villages in Dawei SEZ

Thousands of local residents have been forced to flee their homes as the military council troops are conducting offensives in the villages in the Dawei Special Economic Zone of ​​Yephyu Township of Tanintharyi Region, locals said.

Since 7 April, the two military columns with a strength of over 150 stormed the villages in Dawei Special Economic Zone.

Thousands of locals from more than 10 villages including Nabule, Wat Chaung, Kha Maung Chaung, Kadataing, Aye Ka Ni, Ya Nge, Mudu, Hteingyi and Pa Ra Dat villages, have been displaced.

On the morning of 8 April, the military column arrived in Kha Maung Chaung and Kadataing through Wetgaung. Then, the military column is proceeding to Nabule in Dawei Special Economic Zone, local residents said.

Till now, there have been no fighting between the combined People’s Defense Force (PDF) and the advancing column, locals said.

Residents said that since the coup, civilians from Nabule have been often forced to flee their homes due to the fighting and the arrivals of military columns. Sometimes they have had to flee for months.

Tens of thousands of local residents have fled their homes due to the fighting between the two armed forces in Tanintharyi Region since the coup, and they have not been able to return to their homes till now, according to those helping to IDPs.
