14 locals including CDM teacher arrested in Yebyu’s Kan Pauk area

According to locals from Kan Pauk area in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region, 14 civilians, including teachers who have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), were arrested in the three weeks from 1-20 February.

In the first week of February, the military council arrested Daw Kay Jar Oo, a local CDM teacher from Kan Pauk. After her arrest, military council soldiers relentlessly arrested locals and accused them of having links with the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), according to locals.

Among those arrested are 12 women, including CDM teacher Daw Kay Jar Oo, Daw Yin Yin Aye, Daw Nilar San, Daw Thet Thet Mon, shopkeeper Daw Cho Cho and Daw Nyo Nyo, and two men according to locals.

The detainees had not been released as of 23 February and were being held incommunicado with their families, according to people close to them.

Locals report that the detainees are being held at the Mawrawady naval base in Kan Pauk, where they are being interrogated.

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), at least 1,500 civilians have been arrested in the Tanintharyi Region since the coup.
