Six civilians were killed by the military council’s heavy shells in Kawlin on the Sagaing-Kachin border, within a week, according to the Kawlin District Public Administrative Body.

At around 9 am on 2 January, the heavy shell fired by Light Infantry Battalion-120 in Wuntho Township landed and exploded in the ward and Myoma market in Kawlin, killing two women, according to an official of the Kawlin District Public Administrative Body.

“This morning, the army fired six rounds of heavy shells. One shell landed in town while another shell landed in the Myoma market. Two women died on the spot as the heavy shell landed among vegetable sellers and fish sellers,” he said.

The heavy shell fired by the military council exploded in Kawlin Myoma market, killing six civilians. The detailed investigation is still ongoing to identify the victims, the official continued.

The military council is carrying out the reinforcement of troops and heavy shelling to recapture Kawlin Township which is under the control of combined People’s Defense Forces (PDFs).

“The military council’s LIB- 111 and 120 based in Wuntho are conducting an offensive in Kawlin in cooperation with military-backed PyuSawHtee. It is located at least 5 miles to at most 7 miles from Kawlin. The military council is likely to recapture Kawlin,” he said.

On 28 and 30 December, four civilians including two children were killed due to the military council’s indiscriminate firing of heavy shells into Kawlin via Wuntho Township.

Kawlin District Public Administrative Body has warned the people to take extra care as the military council army is carrying out targeted attacks on civilians.

Since 5 November, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the combined PDFs captured Kawlin. On 3 December, the Public Administrative Body and the defense forces started operating the public administrative mechanism, according to the statement by the National Unity Government (NUG).
