Robbers are targeting women in Ye Township of Mon State where martial law is imposed, according to local residents.

There are frequent robbery cases in Ye Township, Especially, the women are targeted for robbery, a local resident from Ye Township said.

“About one month ago, a woman was robbed and raped in Kawdwat and the road to Thaungpyin. Three to four robberies that targeted women were reported in Lamaing in a month,” the local resident said.

Locals said that a group of people threatened a woman with a gun and robbed her of one million Kyats between Kwinshae village and Kyaukmichaung village in Ye Township on 5 October, residents said.

On 19 September, two persons robbed a woman on a motorbike on Ye-Asin road to deposit money at a loan company in Ye.

“As far as I know, thieves and robbers are committing the cases in groups in Ye Township,” a local resident from Ye said.

In addition to Ye Township, robberies that target women are continuously reported in Mawlamyine and other townships in Mon State, according to local residents.

Those involved in most of thefts, robberies and muggings cannot be arrested in Mon State. Residents also said that they complained to the relevant authorities, but the situation remains unchanged.

The public has criticized that the number of criminals has increased as the police are making crackdowns on the anti-junta people following the military coup instead of crackdown on thieves, robbers and muggers.

There is a significant increase in the number of thefts and robberies in Mon State following the military coup. Not only the cities but also the rural areas see more thieves and robberies, local residents said.
