The Interim Executive Council of Karenni State (IEC) has requested relevant humanitarian organizations to help Karenni IDPs assistance as the current demand for more than 2.5 million Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from Karenni (Kayah) State is high.

In particular, we have requested the international community to help solve political and humanitarian issues in Karenni State. We have requested the Thai government to continue to accept the Karenni IDPs who have arrived in Thailand until they reach a safe state, Zu Padonmar, Secretary-1 of the IEC said.

“We have especially requested the Thai government to temporarily accept Karenni IDPs on the Thai-Karenni border and open the temporary camps,” she added.

On 10 September, a summary of humanitarian needs in Karenni State was published on the IEC’s Facebook page.

There are more than 200 IDP camps and more than 250,000 IDPs in Karenni State. The monthly food expenditure for the IDPs is more than one million US dollars.

Currently, there are people helping each other to cover these expenses. International INGOs and CSOs also provide aid, according to the IEC statement.

The statement said that groups working on humanitarian assistance on the ground can cooperate with the IEC.

It has been more than two years since the local residents fled due to the fighting in Karenni State. Until now, the IDPs have not been able to return to their homes, and due to the renewed fighting, the number of IDPs is increasing, according to those helping the IDPs.
