Kawthaung battle forces hundreds of locals to flee to Thailand

Hundreds of locals have fled to Thailand following the battle in Maliwan village in Kawthaung Township in Tanintharyi Region, according to locals.

Fighting erupted between the military council and local defense force when the military column advanced to Maliwan village on 20 September. Nearly 50 locals from Maliwan village immediately fled to Thailand by boat.

More than 200 locals fled to Thailand as the military council which suffered huge losses in the fighting entered the village by reinforcements, according to IDPs.

Thai authorities have provided temporary assistance to local residents fleeing to Thailand.

At least three military council soldiers were killed in the Kawthaung battle. There were no reports of casualties from the local defense force, according to the revolutionary forces.

Due to frequent fighting between the military council and local defense force, locals from Maliwan and Khamuakgyi villages in Kawthaung Township on the Thai-Myanmar border have fled to Thailand, according to locals.
