Caption-Some Karenni IDP camps destroyed by strong winds and heavy rains.

Karenni Internally Displaced People (IDPs) are in need of roofs and shelters as the shelters are damaged by strong winds and incessant rains in the villages in the western part of Demoso Township in Loikaw District in Karenni (Kayah) State, according to the persons helping the IDPs.

There are around 70,000 IDPs in Pasaylar, Warbanpalo and Cherrykone villages.

A local man helping refugees said that if there are incessant rains like this, the temporary shelters may collapse. So, there is a high demand for shelters.

“Rain-proof shelters are destroyed by heavy rains as it rains for three consecutive days. The IDPs are in need of new shelters,” he said.

Even though the wind is strong and the rain is heavy, it is still bearable for the IDPs who live in tarpaulin tents under the pine trees in the western part of Demoso. The IDPs who lived in the places like the fields suffer more damage, he added.

A woman helping the IDPs said: “In the Pasaylar village where we lived, it rains every day, and there are not enough rain-proof sheets. There are the collapses of shelters.”

The arrival of aid faces a delay as some areas on the border of Karenni State are allowed to pass through only with the permission of local officials, locals said.

The persons helping the IDPs said they find it difficult to help the IDPs as much as they can as the military council has blocked some road sections.

As the price of rice, which is the main food for the IDPs, is high and there is a shortage of rice, the IDPs are in need of food, according to those helping refugees and human rights activists.

More than 400,000 Karenni people displaced by the fighting between the military council and revolutionary forces are in need of aid, according to the Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG).
