A 12-year-old cowboy died after stepping on a landmine in Kyaikto

A 12-year-old cowboy died as he stepped on a landmine in Wardatkwin village in Kyaikto Township of Mon State, according to social rescue organizations.

On the morning of 14 July, Maung Aye Chan Thakhin stepped on a landmine between Wardatkwin village and Kanyinaing village at the Ahayoeoh junction in Thonekwa village-tract in Kyaikto Township while he was herding cattle.

He died on the spot as his right leg and thigh were seriously wounded, a member of the rescue organization said.

Landmine incidents often occur in Kyaikto, Bilin and Thaton in Thaton District where intense fighting is taking place between the military council and the combined force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Force (PDF).

The body of the dead child was transported to the Theinzayat Station Hospital with the help of the social rescue association.

At night on 5 July, a man who stepped on a landmine was seriously wounded on Natgyi-Binban road near Natgyi-Shansu village in Bilin Township, the members of social rescue association said.

Following the military coup, there have been a series of landmine incidents in Bilin, Thaton, Kyaikto and Ye Townships. The civilians who stepped on landmines lost their lives and legs, according to locals.
