As the number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the Karenni (Kayah) state in last June has increased by thousands, they are currently in need of shelters and food, said the persons helping the IDPs.

The persons who mainly need shelter and food are: the locals from Mese, Ywathit and Hpasawng Townships due to the fighting in June and locals from Yardo village where fighting is taking place, the persons helping the IDPs.

“The local people who fled the war are still living in the forests. The accommodation is inconvenient. Since it is the rainy season, shelter and food are especially needed,” U Ba Nyar, member of Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) said.

“There will be no food as they have to hide in the forests. The IDPs can buy nothing even if they have money. The IDPs are in urgent need of rations and shelters. It is located in the outskirts of Karenni state. The road access is difficult as the IDPs are taking shelter in remote areas,” U Banyar said.

Currently, the persons helping IDPs are conducting a rain-proof shelter campaign for Karenni people who arrived in the Thai border. An individual or a group can make donation via Facebook link (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093718110750).

A male IDP said: “On the ground the IDPs really need aid. There are many families who suddenly have to flee. Especially rain-proof sheets. Even if they don’t have a stable place to live in, they need rain-proof shelters and rations. For the long term, the needs of DPs remain as fighting is going on. I would like to request the public to provide aid.”

Since June, residents have fled their homes due to the military council’s aerial bombardments in the battles across Karenni state. More than 9,000 Karenni refugees have reached the Thai border, the persons helping the IDPs said.

Due to the clashes following the coup, around 270,000 locals from Shan-Kayah border in Karenni state have fled to safer places, according to the Karenni Human Rights Group’s report.
