The Myanmar army has arrested more than 40 civilians from Kanetthiri and Natseik villages in Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to displaced residents.

On 9 June, a junta column of more than 30 soldiers entered Kanetthiri and rounded up more than 20 people. From there, they advanced to Natseik and abducted nearly 20 people, according to some residents.

Those arrested by the regime troops were held at the Natseik village monastery and forced to wear military uniforms, a resident said.

Junta soldiers also set fire to three houses in Kanetthiri. An elderly person and a child were reportedly killed in the arson attack, but Than Lwin Times could not independently verify this report.

The Myanmar army’s advance reportedly forced the entire villages of Kanetthiri and Natseik to flee to safer areas.

According to a local research group, more than 34,000 people were displaced by armed clashes and artillery fire by the Myanmar Army in Tanintharyi Region in May this year.
