The ongoing battle between Myanmar army troops and the joint Chin defence forces in the Timit River Plain, located between the towns of Hakha and Thantlang in Chin State, has persisted for nearly two weeks, resulting in reported casualties on both sides. It is reported that the regime army is making efforts to seize control of the area by advancing across the Timit River Plain and penetrating Thantlang.

In this interview with Khonumthung Media Group, Salai Htet Ni, spokesperson for the Chin National Front/Chin National Army (CNF/CNA), provided insights into the current situation and developments on the ground regarding the ongoing conflict.

Q – Can you tell us about the situation of the battle in the Timit River Plain between Hakha and Thantalang?

A – They began to advance on 26 (May). Before that, they bombed with planes for three days to clear the way for their ground troops. They also fired artillery shells. Since then, the fighting has continued. So far, 12 comrades have fallen on our side and about ten others have been injured. About 30 junta soldiers have been killed so far, but our count shows 27 dead and 15 injured on their side. We got this data from sources on the ground. The fighting is likely to continue. They marched up with about 150 soldiers. I think they’re trying to take control of the area first by sending reinforcements to their positions in Thantalang and then pushing us back.

Q – How were up to 12 members of the Chin defense killed in the battle in Timit River Plain?

A – They were killed by artillery strikes. On 29 May, six comrades lost their lives to artillery fire when one of our fighters came to the aid of another who had been wounded. Some of them succumbed to their injuries before they made it to the hospital. Most of the deaths were due to artillery fire from the junta.

Q – What was the reason for the Myanmar army’s advance in Thantlang?

A – They declared martial law in our Chin State. We have also received inside information that they’ll conduct land and air attacks in Chin and Karenn this year. From there, they’ll try to suppress the local defense forces. Therefore, they have begun to march and attack all the way to the CNF/CNF headquarters in Victoria.

Q – Are you saying that the regime is trying to retake Thantlang and then approach the CNF headquarters?

A – Yes, you can put it that way. Because they have already talked about it. Min Aung Hlaing has already announced that they’ll crack down on any organizations that cooperate with the NUG. So they’re sticking to their plan. That is obvious.

Q – How might the military situation develop further? Will the situation deteriorate?

A – It’s likely that they’ll increase their military activities. Because we already knew from inside information that they’ll increase their offensives in Chin Hills, Sagaing and Karenni during the rainy season. We also predicted it that way. No matter how big their columns are, we’re all prepared to crush them. Their primary goal isn’t to withdraw from Myanmar politics and to remain in power permanently. That is their main goal. Therefore, they don’t even spare the people and continue to threaten their own people as the enemy.

Q – We have learned that the Chin defense forces also suffered heavy casualties in the Timit River Plain battle. What would you like to say about that?

A – This is part of an armed revolution. But we blood brothers are all ready for our national cause. It’s human nature to be saddened by the loss of our subordinates. But the more brutal the military council acts, the stronger our spirit will be and the more they’ll incur the hatred of the people. In fact, we’re outgunned in this battle, but everyone knows that we now have the upper hand. In any case, it’s human nature that we’re saddened by the loss of our comrades and supporters of the common good. Whatever happens, we’re determined to fight to the end. I believe people will understand all this because we’re doing this for the people.
