More than 3,000 locals have fled to safer places due to the military council troop’s constant shelling without any battles in Laethit village and nearby villages in Tanintharyi Township of Tanintharyi Region, Tanintharyi Township People’s Defense Force (PDF) told Than Lwin Times.

Since the morning of 1 June, the military council troops based in Zawae village and the mountain in Santhit village of Tanintharyi Township fired at least 20 rounds of heavy shells into Laethit, Chaungwa and Thaungphyu villages.

The military council’s shelling wounded a villager. Due to the shelling, more than 2,000 locals from Laethit and Thaungphyu villages have fled for safety.

Civilian houses in the villages were damaged by the shelling. However, the exact number of damaged houses is still unknown, said an information officer of Tanintharyi Township PDF.

The revolutionary forces have reviewed that the firing of heavy shells into Laethit village without any battles may be linked to the ambush attack on the military convoy.

On 31 May, the military council suffered heavy casualties as the military convoy leaving Myeik for Tanintharyi was ambushed in Sindin, Chaungnyiko, Runphoe and Banlamon villages three times.

Due to the battles and shelling following the coup, nearly 40,000 locals from Tanintharyi Region have fled to safer places, the persons helping the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) said.
