Locals flee to safer places following clashes near Thayawaddy village in Yebyu Township

Locals have fled to safer place due to fighting between the military council and a combined force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and local defense forces, near Thayawaddy village in the eastern part of Alesakhan village and Lawthaing village in Yebyu Township of Tanintharyi Region, since the evening of 31 May.

Yesterday, 12 military vehicles carrying junta soldiers entered between Lawthaing village and Yarphu village. Then, the military council clashed with a combined force of the KNLA and local defense forces.

“Fighting took place at 6.30 pm and at 9.30 pm yesterday. Fighting took place at around 10.30 am today. The casualties from both sides are still unknown,” a local told the Independent Mon News Agency (IMNA).

Due to the battles, the elder persons, women and children from Mayawchaing, Hlegate, Thaechaung and Thayawaddy villages have fled for safety.

“Until this evening, no more gunshots were heard. However, the military vehicles that entered yesterday have not yet turned back. So, the battle is not over. The battle is likely to continue,” a local from Alesakhan village said.

Not only the New Mon State Party (Dawei District) but also Karen armed forces are based in the eastern part of Alesakhan village in Yebyu Township.
