A convoy of ASEAN diplomats on a mission to provide aid for the IDPs in Nanaw village on Hopone- Hsihseng Union road in Hsihseng Township of Shan State, was attacked by an unknown armed group at around 9 am on 7 May, a member of the Hsihseng Township IDP committee told the Shan News.

A committee member said: “The convoy includes the ambassadors from ASEAN. I don’t know how many delegates come? They came here by convoy. The convoy also includes police. They faced the attack in the north of Nanaw village before reaching Hsihseng. The convoy turned back following the shooting.”

There were no reports of casualties in the shooting. However, the Shan News is trying to confirm it.

Another person from the IDP committee said: “The shooting is true. Yesterday, the delegates and diplomats from ASEAN countries came here to ask about the situation. The convoy encountered the attack halfway.”

No organizations have claimed responsibility for the shooting.

A person helping the IDPs said: “I feel sorry about the attack on the ASEAN diplomats. Nobody will assume it is a good thing as they face attack during the tour to help the IDPs. They (attackers) are totally wrong.”

Nanaw village between Hsihseng and Saikkhaung model village is located about six miles from Hsihseng.

Over 8,000 locals from Hsihseng Township fled to safer places due to the battles on the Shan-Kayah border following the military coup. They are in urgent need of food, medicine and temporary shelters.
