More than 3,000 locals in Tigyaing Township, Sagaing Region, are in need of medical supplies and emergency assistance after military council troops set fire to Nyaungpinthar village, according to locals.

According to reports, the arson attack by junta troops who had left Tigyaing on 30 March has forced more than 3,000 people to flee to safety and they are in need of help, said a person helping the displaced people.

“They have been displaced for a week now. 218 houses were burned down and about 500 people were affected. They couldn’t take anything with them and are now in tears,” he said.

Currently, those affected by the junta’s arson attack and other residents have sought refuge in nearby forests and monasteries and are in urgent need of help and medicines, said a resident of Nyaungpinthar village.

“There are many elderly people and children among the displaced. For the elderly hiding in the forests, it won’t be easy to shelter from the summer heat and rain. Now it is summer, but it is cloudy and cold, so we urgently need blankets and mosquito nets,” said one of the residents affected by the fire.

He added that those fleeing are also suffering from diarrhea because it is difficult to get drinking water.

Locals said military council troops had also burned down as many as 218 houses in Nyaungpinthar village before, which is ten miles south of Tigyaing and has over 1800 households.
