The United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom issued statements on the alarming political situation in Myanmar after the military council’s election commission announced on 28 March that 39 parties, including the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, had been dissolved for failing to re-register.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Japanese government has always urged the Myanmar military to find a peaceful solution to the political issues and that it is seriously concerned that the exclusion of the NLD from the political process will make it even more difficult to improve the situation.

Japan has urged Myanmar to immediately release NLD officials, including Suu Kyi, and to chart a path to a peaceful resolution of the problem that involves all parties concerned, the statement said.
It also called for an end to more aggressive attacks on civilians after the state of emergency was extended on 1 February 2023.

The British Foreign Office criticized the dissolution of the NLD and the 39 parties as an attack on the rights and freedoms of the Myanmar people.

The statement said that without meaningful and inclusive dialogue and negotiations, there is no way to resolve the current crisis caused by the military council. The UK condemns the military regime’s politically motivated actions and use of increasingly brutal tactics to sow fear and suppress opposition.

The U.S. State Department deputy spokesman said that any election without the participation of all stakeholders in Burma could not be considered free or fair and that holding elections amid widespread opposition to the junta would only increase instability.
