The United States on Friday announced further sanctions against some individuals and businesses linked to Myanmar’s military.

The United States has been pressuring Myanmar and imposing sanctions since the military coup in 2021.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that it has imposed sanctions on two individuals and six entities linked to Myanmar’s military that Washington accuses of enabling the country’s ongoing atrocities, through the import, storage and distribution of jet fuel to the military.

Myanmar has been plunged into chaos since the junta took power in February 2021, with a resistance movement fighting the military on multiple fronts following a bloody crackdown on opponents.

The Treasury said that since the coup, the military has continued to commit atrocities and violence against the Myanmar people and has increasingly relied on airstrikes in civilian-populated areas.

It cited as examples an airstrike on the village of Let Yet Kone in central Myanmar that hit a school and an attack in northern Kachin state that killed up to 80 people.

“Burma’s military regime continues to inflict pain and suffering on its own people,” the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, said in the statement.
“The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to the Burmese people and will continue to deny the military the materials it uses to commit these atrocities,” he added.

The Treasury Department on Friday targeted Myanmar suppliers of military aviation fuel, imposing sanctions on Asia Sun Group, Asia Sun Trading Co. Ltd and Cargo Link Petroleum Logistics Co. Ltd.

Also targeted were individuals and companies that the Treasury said were associated with or supplied equipment to the Myanmar military, including a close associate of the military regime and the associate’s companies, Star Sapphire Group of Companies and Star Sapphire Trading Company Limited.
