Military seizes and destroys school materials in Mindat Township

December 9th, 2021

The military council’s troops seized and destroyed school materials to be used for the schools run by Mindat Township People’s Administration in Mindat Township of Chin State.

Under the leadership of the Education Department of the Mindat Township the People’s Administration, the schools have reopened in more than 100 villages.

Salai Yaw Mann, Spokesperson of the Mindat Township People’s Administration said: “Due to the internet blackout, we find it difficult to recruit teachers across the state. In addition, we need books, ballpens and pencils. The military council came to know about the reopening of schools in the mountain areas when we buy school materials. We face difficulty as soldiers seize and destroy even pencils. It is impossible for us to raise funds for the purchase of school materials via facebook.”

Teaching for children has started in Mindat Township for over three months. More than 200 volunteer teachers are teaching more than 2,000 primary students from 120 villages, Myanmar, English, Math and literacy.

“We are unable to fully run the system in terms of home school system and coverage. Our program aims to bridge the education gap and ensure the mental and physical development of children during the interim period. The children may stay at their homes and at the IDP camps. They can pursue their education by forgetting the life of IDPs. Our teaching has prioritized a friendly and happy form at schools.”

Monasteries, meeting halls, churches and government schools are mainly used for teaching. Teachers are sharing knowledge with the use of a new teaching system.

Around 20,000 locals in Mindat Township are displaced by the fighting between the Chinland Defense Force (CDF)-Mindat and the military council’s troops.
