On the occasion of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 80th birthday on 19 June, embassies based in Myanmar including the European Union, Sweden, United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, France, Germany and others paid tribute, by changing their profile pictures and posting photos of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with birthday wishes. Additionally, the US Embassy issued a statement demanding the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi along with other unlawfully detained individuals. 1

The Quad member countries – United States, India, Japan and Australia – expressed concern about Myanmar’s deteriorating crisis in a joint statement issued after their meeting in Washington DC on 1 June. They expressed concern about regional impacts and the spread of transnational crimes due to Myanmar’s crisis, and urged full implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus to resolve Myanmar’s crisis while fully supporting ASEAN’s efforts. 2

Park Eun Hong, Director of the Asian NGO Resource Center at Sungkonghoe University, and Jeon Yae-rin, deputy leader of the Democracy School without Borders, arrived in Mae Sot on the Thai-Myanmar border on 13 June. They met with People’s Defense Force (PDF) members and provided financial support for medical treatment of injured PDF members. They also shared educational videos about key issues in South Korea’s democratic development, as reported in the Korea Herald. 3

A preliminary survey for constructing a railway line from Sairang/Sihmui village near Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, India, to the Myanmar border in Lawngtlai district has been completed, but the map has not yet received final approval, according to a Mizoram Upper House MP. The railway line will be 223 kilometers long and is planned to extend to Zorinpui Assam Rifles Base, which is about one kilometer from the border with Paletwa Township in Chin State, Myanmar. 4 The Indian Embassy in Myanmar sent birthday flowers to the NLD headquarters in Yangon to honor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 80th birthday. 5

An investment promotion and protection agreement was signed between Dr. Kan Zaw, the military council’s Union Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, and Russia’s Minister of Economic Development during the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The military council stated that this agreement would create favorable conditions for investors from both countries, enhance mutual investment opportunities, and provide legal protection. 6

At the 38th Asia-Pacific Assembly held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Malaysian Prime Minister stated that Myanmar’s internal conflict is one of the most intense and unresolved challenges in Southeast Asia. He emphasized that in addressing the crisis, actions should be transformed beyond statements, and urged all ASEAN members to work together to prevent escalation of violence and implement the Myanmar-led peace process. 7

UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, stated at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council on 25 June that the UN would not recognize or accept the military council’s planned elections. He said that the military council must be opposed by cutting off funding, weapons, and legitimacy, and that member states have a responsibility to deny legitimacy by not recognizing the military council’s elections. He urged member states to condemn these elections as sham elections and fraud. 8
