Discussions are underway among various revolutionary forces, including the National Unity Government (NUG), Ethnic Resistance Organizations (EROs), and other resistance groups, to form a new coalition called the Federal Steering Council (FSC). On 25 January, a meeting between the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and the NUG addressed differences in views among the revolutionary forces and included discussions on cooperation with the FSC.

Meanwhile, the military junta has completed all three phases of its elections. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) secured the most seats with candidates who shed their military uniforms. On the other hand, the junta arrested and prosecuted more than 400 civilians for allegedly opposing the elections.

The coup maker, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, stated that he could not understand why the international community does not recognize the elections they conducted.

The Philippines, which holds the ASEAN chairmanship for 2026, sent its Foreign Secretary Ms. Maria Theresa P. Lazaro to Naypyidaw to meet with the junta leader. She also engaged in discussions with representatives of the NUG and EROs. These meetings particularly focused on exchanging views and discussing ways to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus (5PC).

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, who held the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, briefed Malaysian parliamentarians on 20 January 2026, regarding ASEAN’s approach and decisions on the elections led by Myanmar’s military junta.
ASEAN has stated that it will not recognize the legitimacy of these elections, nor will it send election observers in response to the junta’s request.
