During the last week of February, a delegation led by General N’Ban La, Chairman of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), and Vice-Chairman Lieutenant General Gun Maw met with senior Chinese government officials in China.During the meeting, the delegation was questioned regarding whether the KIO was responsible for the 20 February attack on a passenger aircraft at Myitkyina Airport.

Chinese officials also urged the KIO to engage in dialogue with the military junta. In addition, since important Chinese government meetings are scheduled for March, the KIO was asked to halt military operations in border areas throughout the month, citing the need to ensure the security of civilians on both sides of the China-Myanmar border. For its part, the KIO clarified that it was not responsible for the attack on the passenger plane and that such actions are not part of its policy.

While further stances or responses from the KIO during the meeting were not made public, KIO Vice-Chairman Lieutenant General Gun Maw has explicitly stated that they will no longer accept separate, one-on-one talks with the junta. He further noted that the KIO had also asked the junta whether it was willing to engage in dialogue with the National Unity Government (NUG).

On 6 March 2026, Philippine Foreign Minister and ASEAN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Ms. Theresa Lazaro, delivered a briefing on the Myanmar crisis at the United Nations Security Council meeting in New York City.

She also called for greater international cooperation to support a Myanmar-led, Myanmar-owned peace process that enables the people of Myanmar to determine their own future.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) issued a statement on 5 March welcoming the military junta’s recent release of prisoners and the closing of legal cases. However, the EU reaffirmed its continued support for the release of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all remaining political prisoners.
