A 16-year-old boy who was seriously wounded by an artillery explosion and was being treated at Sittwe Hospital reportedly died at around 2 am on November 18.

The eighth-grade student named Maung Ngwe Paing (also known as Maung Kyaw Win Tun) succumbed to his severe injuries to his head, chest, arms and legs after being admitted to the hospital the previous day.

“We left Maungdaw for Buthidaung at 6 am on November 17. We hired a motorized boat from Buthidaung to Yay Chan Pyin village. From there we were picked up by Myittar Yaungchi (social welfare group) by car and arrived at Sittwe General Hospital around 11:30 am. He was treated at the hospital and died at 1:45 am” the victim’s elder brother Maung Ye Lin Naing told Development Media Group (DMG).

His body was buried at Sittwe Cemetery at 1 pm on November 18.

“There were difficulties for us to bring the body back to the village. So I talked to my father and decided to bury him here,” he said.

Ye Lin Naing added that his brother was a compassionate person and always helpful to his parents, and it made him very sad that not all family members were present at the funeral.

“I feel very sad. I feel very sorry for him. He was very helpful to his parents. He also did chores when he came back from school. But all the family members couldn’t attend his funeral. Our parents are taking care of two injured younger brothers in the hospital in Maungdaw. It would be difficult for them to come here too. So I was the only family member to organize his funeral,” he said.

Another injured [in the shelling] is currently receiving emergency treatment at Sittwe hospital and needs financial support for medical treatment.

Jade Chuang village was shelled with artillery at around 12:30 pm on November 16. As a result, 11 people were killed and 27 others were injured. With the person who died while receiving treatment at Sittwe hospital, the death toll has now risen to 12.

Locals said the artillery fire came from military council troops.

The military regime has denied the claim, saying the previous day that “the deaths and injuries were caused by indiscriminate shelling by the Arakan Army (AA).”

However, the ethnic army announced on November 16 that the shooting, in which people were killed and injured, was the result of a deliberate and premeditated terrorist attack by Border Guard Division 7, known locally as Na Kha Kha in Maungdaw Township.
