Locals said since December 13th they have to guard Mytel mobile towers in the villages of Mawlamyinegyun Township with a quota of five persons per night.
A resident from Nghattaw village said: “Village administrators force the villagers to guard mobile towers near the villages as the military puts pressure on the administrators citing the destruction of towers in the village.”
The military-appointed administrators called a meeting after a Mytel mobile tower was blown up near Ngattaw village in Mawlamyinegyun Township at night on December 10th, according to locals.
The person who fails to guard the towers has to pay a fine of Ks-20,000. The administrators told the villagers to hire the night guard for those who are unable to guard the tower.
U Kyaw Gyi, a local said: “Although the people in the rural area have to guard Mytel mobile tower, there is no such case in downtown Mawlamyinegyun.”
An official of the Mytel telecom office in Ayeyawaddy Region said: “Mytel mobile towers in the villages of Mawlamyinegyun were burned down seven times.”
There are 23 Mytel mobile phone towers in Mawlamyinegyun Township, according to the Ayeyawaddy Region Telecom Office.
