Two Asho Chin women from Bonebaw village in Ngape Township, Magway Region, were reportedly discovered on October 9, 2022, after being missing for three days.
The victims – Mai Hnaung Par Hla, 14, and Mai Shwe Zin Ye, also known as Ma Khin Win, 21 – had disappeared on October 6 on their way from Gotegyi village to Bonebaw village. On October 9, they were found dead near Myaylat village, a relative said.
“They went missing on October 6. All neighboring villages joined the search and their bodies were found outside Myaylat village. They said the bodies had wounds. Now they have been cremated. We don’t know why they disappeared,” said the victim’s relative.
Mai Zin Ye was a preschool teacher who taught children in the community, and Mai Hnaung Par Hla was a 7th grade student.
Bonebaw village – about 30 miles from Ngape town – is a village where the Asho Chin people live, and there are more than 10 such villages in the township.
The military council’s Light Infantry Division 88 is occassionally stationed in Myaylat village, where the bodies were found, and there is also a regional junta police station in Gotegyi village.
Military council troops are also present in surrounding villages, but the exact cause of the two women’s deaths is not yet known.
