Three family members were reportedly killed on the spot when artillery shells from the Kyuktaw Military Operations Command, MOC 9, hit the victims’ house in Pi Si village, Rakhine, on the night of October 31 in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State.

The victims of the junta’s nighttime shelling are 45-year-old father U Soe Win, 44-year-old Daw Than Than Wai and their daughter, 13-year-old 6th grader Ma Phyo Phyo Wai.

“The artillery shell hit the house around 11 pm at night. They were sleeping at that time. The shell hit the wall of the house and the family members were fatally injured. They were killed on the spot. The family consisted of four people in total. Their eldest son is working in Malaysia,” said a resident from a nearby house.

Similarly, military council troops fired seven artillery shells at Pi Si village the previous day. Four of them landed and exploded in the village, damaging houses and killing livestock, said another resident.

“They fired seven artillery shells, but only four hit the village. One fell on the side of a house, killing the three family members. Another one hit in the middle of U Than Tin’s house, right next to it, but U Than Tin was not hurt because he was hiding in the bunker under the house. The house was destroyed. Another shell exploded in front of his house, killing four cattle and injuring two,” he said.

Villagers reported that regime forces shelled the village with artillery for no reason from Kyuktaw MOC 9 the previous day.

Telephone calls to Arakan State’s Minister of Security and Border Affairs, Colonel Kyaw Thura, and to the junta’s spokesman, Zaw Min Tun, went unanswered.

Currently, residents of Pi Si village are on alert due to indiscriminate firing by the militia council.

On October 29, a 10th grade student was injured when the junta’s 539th Battalion shelled Sin Ma Kyaw village with artillery from the foot of Kan Sauk Mountain.

In addition, a woman from Paik The village was killed by nighttime shelling by military council troops on October 17.
