Thousands of local residents have been forced to flee their homes due to the military council’s artillery shelling of villages in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to residents and Launglon People’s Defense Force (PDF).
Since the attack on Maung Ma Kan police station on 18 August, military ships patrolling the sea west of Thae Pone Taung camp and Tha Baw Seik village have been shelling Tha Baw Seik, Pyin Gyi, and Ka Yin Gyi villages daily.
Over 3,000 local residents from Tha Baw Seik, Pyin Gyi, and Ka Yin Gyi villages have fled to Launglon town and nearby villages due to the military council’s shelling.
The military council’s artillery shelling destroyed at least four houses and wounded two women in Pyin Gyi village, according to local residents.
An official from the Launglon Township PDF reported that the military council’s forces are carrying out indiscriminate heavy shelling more than 20 times a day.
Following the shootings in Maungmakan and Dawei in Launglon Township on the evening of 17 August, the military council has been carrying out indiscriminate artillery shelling in areas where the PDFs are known to be active.
According to data collected by FE5 Taninthary, a local research group, the fighting displaced over 60,000 locals in Tanintharyi Region in July.
