An interview with the NUG information officer U Nay Phone Latt
September 22nd, 2022
The Myanmar’s military council has targeted schools, education facilities, innocent civilians, and minors in the wake of the military coup. U Nay Phone Latt, Information Officer of the National Unity Government (NUG), was interviewed about the military regime’s actions.
Q: The military council has been targeting schools, educational facilities, and children in many parts of Myanmar. What would you like to say about this situation?
A: The targeted attacks and killings of civilians, especially underage children, by the military council are cruel and inhumane. Normally, soldiers from both sides are supposed to fight each other in a battle. But now we’ve found that the military regime considers the entire population as the enemy and is targeting and killing them.
Q: To what extent have the actions of the military council violated human rights and what should be done to stop these actions?
A: The military council’s terrorist forces, including coup leader Min Aung Hlaing and his followers, have committed these inhumane acts. As long as they’re in power, they’ll continue these acts day after day. The NUG is trying to stop these acts as soon as possible, and the international community shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this. I’d like to say that we need to do something as soon as possible to help effectively.
Q: What is the role of popular participation in this revolution and how effective do you think it is?
A: The most important thing I understand is that the whole public is involved in this revolution. This issue is between the whole public and the terrorist military regime. I think that’s what the public understands. People have been continuously donating to the NUG and its armed ethnic allies. Some people have even contributed with what they have by selling their earrings and possessions to support the revolution. Thus, the entire population consistently and steadfastly supports and participates in this revolution to this day.
Q: Similar accidents are happening all over Myanmar. To what extent have you reached out to the international community on this issue? Can you tell me something about the situation?
A: I’ve been working continuously to let the international community know what’s really happening in Myanmar. We can divide the international community into three groups: those who support the murderous military council even though they know what’s really happening in the country; countries like Russia who only have their own interests in mind; and those who heartily support the revolution. But we must also understand that there may be delays because each country regulates the affairs of other countries based on its foreign policy. Therefore, we continue to strive for the recognition of the NUG by working with the international community while encouraging people to be independent so that we can eliminate the military council once and for all through unity with all ethnic nationalities. Moreover, we’re trying our best to achieve a democratic union that the people want through independent efforts. The power of the people is the most important thing. When the power of the people and the ethnic alliances are united, we don’t need to expect international help.
Q: What else would you like to add?
A: The military council has committed a series of inhumane atrocities to this day. These acts won’t stop as long as they’re in power. In other words, we can see that this is the tide of revolution. It also shows the intensity that this revolution has reached and how much the military regime has deteriorated or how great their chances are of being defeated. I mean, they’re no longer able to solve a problem in a rational way. What do we call it? They’ve reached a state where they lack rationality. I think the military council is in such a situation because the resistance forces are constantly putting pressure.
So the people will never stop participating in the revolution. They’ll never be able to stop the revolution by simply shooting and killing people as they did in the past. The people won’t stop until the terrorist military council is eliminated.
Therefore, we continue this revolution with everyone’s participation and together we endure the brutality of the fascist military regime. It’ll become even more brutal if the situation on their side worsens. Therefore, I’d like to tell the whole public that we must stand for this and fight the final assault together in unity.
