The military council asks some people to burgle the empty houses of those who are displaced by the fighting in Lay Kay Kaw new town in Myawaddy Township, according to the officials of the new town.

An official told the KIC: “Since February, we have got the information about the burglary. As we get the news, the members of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) started to arrest some burglars. We arrested them when the burglars carried the materials to Minletpan by car. They were caught with land grants, car ownership documents and narcotic drugs. According to the interrogation, the burglars confessed that the military council asked them to do so.”

Those who burgled the houses last night are from Minletpan village. The KNLA arrested four of six burglars. The rest escaped. One of them was injured as he stepped on a landmine.

A local woman told the KIC: “Almost all houses were burgled when I returned to Lay Kay Kaw yesterday. My house was burned. Nothing left. Some houses were hit by heavy and light weapons. I am disappointed as they burn and burgle my house. Most of the locals have lost their houses. I want the current war to come to an end as soon as possible.”

Locals are unable to return to their homes as fighting continues in Lay Kay Kaw new town. So, they commit burglary taking advantage of this situation.
