Tension has arisen between the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) in the Phaya Tone Su town of Karen State, located on the Thai-Myanmar border, over a territorial dispute, according to the military sources.
Tension is rising as the DKBA attempts to build a new camp about 250 meters from the NMSP’s camp, situated between Phaya Tone Su and Palai Japan villages. The situation intensifies as the DKBA continues its efforts despite a ban imposed by the NMSP.
An NMSP official stated, “We have issued a warning to halt the construction of the new camp. They are ignoring our ban and refuse to accept it. Despite this, they continue their efforts. That’s why we are making the necessary preparations. For now, we will make efforts to meet and discuss the issue with their officials first. I don’t know what will happen next.”
According to NMSP sources, the DKBA has also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the NMSP’s camp located at the entrance of Palai Japan village.
In 2019, a clash occurred between the DKBA and the Mon National Liberation Army (MNLA), under the NMSP, when the DKBA attempted to establish a new camp near the NMSP checkpoint in the Phaya Tone Su town.
The NMSP and the DKBA are both Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) that have signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).
