There has been an increase in psychological violence against women in Karenni IDP Camp No. 1, situated along the Thai-Karenni (Kayah) border, according to the Karenni National Women’s Organization (KNWO).

The project manager for women and child protection at the KNOW said, the organization has currently documented eight cases of psychological violence.

“This year, we have received about 8 cases of psychological violence. There are about 5 cases of physical violence. Psychological violence includes verbal insult, threat, eviction from homes, and actions or words that harm the people mentally,” the project manager said.

The KNWO submits reports on domestic, physical, and psychological violence to the judicial affairs department via camp security. Serious cases, such as those involving rape, are referred to the Thai Justice Office, while the UNHCR continues to manage these cases.

The KNWO provides a safe house for women experiencing mental health issues. They also conduct capacity-building activities once a month to help alleviate stress for those affected by mental health problems.

In addition, the project manager added that daily psychological support activities, referred to as psychosocial activities, are being implemented.

“We follow up once a week with the victims after they return home following the resolution of their cases. For example, we assess whether it is safe for them to return home and visit their residences to monitor their mental and physical well-being,” the project manager explained.

Psychological violence is more common among children and women, causing stigma within their communities and concern about the potential consequences, said the project manager of the women and children protection project.
