The formation of the Karenni State government body will enable more systematic and effective management of sectors such as defence, justice, education and health under future plans, said Khun Bedu, Vice-Chairman of the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC).

The IEC Vice-Chairman said this in an online press conference after announcing on the social media site on 12 June that the IEC and the state government were formed with the aim of forming a government to administer Karenni State.

Khun Bedu went on to say that although the defence of the state is already strong, in the capacity of the state government, it will strengthen protection for the people through talks with the revolutionary forces; and in terms of education, primary and higher education will be made available to the public.

“We will spend the funds we receive for defence armaments or military expenditures with transparency and provide the necessary support. In education, so far we have taken care of the education of more than 300 schools and more than 3,000 school-age children. But in the future, we will have to take more responsibility to provide more support for teachers and education,” he said.

With regard to the rule of law, the state government will continue the state police departments established for law enforcement, seek support for displaced people and develop the agricultural sector, he added.

Administrative regulations were drawn up in coordination with the NUG to form the IEC; efforts are also being made to strengthen administrative mechanisms in coordination with relevant groups in the state and ethnic armed organizations, according to the press conference.

Banyar Khun Aung, Deputy Secretary of IEC, responded to media inquiries that the IEC was formed to strengthen the government based on plans already implemented by the Karenni State Consultative Council (KSCC).

“We can assure that we will develop the best possible measures to protect the people not only from the military council’s threats from the air, but also from their ground offensives and artillery threats,” U Banyar Khun Aung said.

IEC members said at the press conference that the IEC is composed of both members of the public and revolutionary forces, and that they are in a process of consolidation and preparation to fulfil their tasks, and that they hope to realise the transition period in the future together with all revolutionary forces.

The IEC press conference, which lasted almost 40 minutes, was attended by about 100 people, including representatives, observers and invited guests from various media companies.

The three members of the Northern Alliance and the Pa-O National Federal Council (PNFC) also welcomed the establishment of the Karenni State Interim Executive Council in a message dated 12 June.
