A seven-year-old girl and her mother were killed and three family members wounded by the heavy shell fired by the military council in Pyinyaygyi village in Shwegyin Township in Nyaunglebin District in the Karen National Union (KNU)-Brigade-3 controlled territory, according to the statement by the Karen National Union (KNU) (Central).
On the afternoon of August 29, the military council’s Infantry Battalion-264 based in Painzaloke fired three rounds of 120-mm mortars.
A local woman from Shwegyin said: “Heavy shell landed on a house where five family members are residing. The girl died on the spot from head wounds. Her mother who got a wound to her waist died at the hospital. The military is firing heavy shells frequently. Fighting is taking place. Locals from Pyinyaygyi village have fled to safety.”
Shelling also hit and destroyed five civilian houses in Pyinyaygyi village, according to the KNU’s statement.

Locals from some villages have fled to safety as the military council troops from Shwegyin Township are frequently firing heavy shells to Nyaunglebin Township and military council troops from Pazunmyaung in Nyaunglebin Township, to Shwegyin Township, according to locals.
On the morning of 28 August, Infantry Battalion-264 fired ten rounds of heavy shells into Chonein, Wetchae, Yaydwinkone and Kyaungkone villages in Shwegyin Township, destroying one civilian house in Yaydwinkone village, according to the KNU’s statement.
At night on 28 August, the heavy shell fired by the military council into Lettatgyi village in Mone Township controlled by the KNU, wounded a 27-year-old man, according to the KNU’s statement.
Hundreds of thousands of locals have fled to safety due to the military council’s frequent offensives, clashes, airstrikes, heavy shelling and the arrests and killings of civilians in three districts in the KNU-controlled territory.
