A 10-year-old female was hit and killed by the heavy shell fired by the military council in Katha Township of Sagaing Region, according to the members of People’s Defense Force (PDF).
At around 9 am on 3 August, the military council from Kalone village carried out the indiscriminate shelling into Inywa on the eastern bank of Ayeyarwaddy River. The shelling killed the female from U Saw Gyun village in Inywa village-tract, a member of Katha Township PDF said.
The military council fired heavy shells into U Saw Gyun village which is located at the opposite of Kalone. The shell hit the children. The victim is the daughter of U Phoe Hsaing and Daw Sal from U Saw Gyun village. The heavy shell hit the child’s abdomen. The child died when she arrived at the hospital at around 10 pm, the PDF member said.
A military column of over 100 soldiers who fired heavy shells are from Light Infantry Battalions-367 and 317 which are standing guard on the military vessels heading to Kachin State via Mandalay along Ayeyarwaddy River, the PDF members said.
A Katha Township PDF member said: “Currently, nine military ships sailing along Ayeyarwaddy River are docked at Thaphankaing jetty in Katha. The military is loading rations with ten vehicles. I don’t know where to go. The military council supplies rations for the battalions as the military council’s battalions are present at jetties in the cities.”
Residents of all the villages along the Ayeyarwaddy River are fleeing to the forests as the military columns are arriving in Katha Township by sea route and inland.
